- Do I need prior experience to join?
No experience is required. Just bring your enthusiasm and maybe a water bottle!
- Are martial arts classes safe for children?
Yes, absolutely! Our classes are designed to be safe and fun for participants of all ages.
- Can I try a class before committing to a membership?
We offer everyone a free trial class (taster session), giving you the opportunity to experience our structured martial arts classes before deciding whether to join.
- Is there a registration fee?
No, you will not be charged a registration fee.
- How often should I attend classes to see progress?
Students can make progress with one class a week, although attending additional classes provides more opportunities to practise and develop their skills. Progression is based on the student's development and progression requirements, rather than attendance alone,
- How long does it take to earn a black belt?
Generally, you should expect to test for your first black belt in about 5 years, however all students progress at their own rate.
- What should I wear to my first class?
Anything which is comfortable, like gym clothes.
- How much would a GI (martial arts suit) cost me?
As a new student at Phoenix Martial Arts, you’ll have the choice to purchase directly from us, you can choose from a traditional wraparound uniform or a deluxe uniform. Either uniform is Phoenix Martial Arts branded, the cost shall vary and dependant upon child or adult sizing.
- How often do Belt promotions take place?
Belt promotions are based on specific criteria, including the completion of a required number of lessons and maintaining the current belt for a set period of time. These guidelines provide a framework, but students progress at their own pace. Instructors have the discretion to delay or accelerate a student’s promotion; however, at least one of the qualifying criteria must be fulfilled. These criteria form part of the student's structured progression through the martial arts curriculum.
- Is there any charge for Belt promotions?
There is no separate charge for standard belt promotions. Belt promotions are included within the monthly membership/tuition fee and form part of the student's progression through the curriculum.
- Are the instructors and volunteers' credentials checked?
Yes, we perform a check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
- Do you have a Safeguarding policy?
Yes. We have a safeguarding policy and a designated safeguarding lead (DSL). Our safeguarding arrangements support the welfare and safety of our students, and the full policy is made available to students and parents/guardians when they join.
- Do you have terms and conditions?
Yes of course, we register your understanding as read and understood which is date stamped along with your e-signature and a copy is sent to you.
- Do you have a mobile app?
Yes. Upon joining, students and parents/guardians receive access to our app, which provides information including student progress, study materials, terms and conditions, codes of conduct and other academy resources.
- What happens if I miss a class?
When this happens, students are encouraged to make up the missed class by attending an alternate day within the same week or a additional class/classes in the following week/weeks.
