Founding Story

Phoenix Martial Arts was founded in 2024 by two individuals: Ray, an experienced martial artist, and a dedicated founding parent who wanted to create a transparent and community-focused academy. The founding parent had first conceived the idea in 2022, inspired by their experiences as a parent navigating martial arts programmes.

The founding parent, whose vision was the driving force behind the academy, was inspired by the positive impact of martial arts on their children, but during that journey, they sat through classes where progress felt unclear, emails and text messages went unanswered, and parents were left in the dark. They began to notice issues such as inconsistent communication, lack of value, and insufficient transparency.

Believing in the philosophy of ‘starting with the customer experience and working backwards,’ they saw an opportunity to create a more open, student-centred, and consumer-friendly environment. With this vision in mind, the founding parent approached Ray, whose teaching had proven influential for their children. Ray was drawn to the idea, and as the vision aligned with his beliefs, he committed to establishing an academy despite knowing it would require starting from scratch and earning trust in a competitive landscape. Together, they set out to build something different.

Since our launch in September 2024, we have committed to personalised training, transparency, and fostering a strong community atmosphere. Ray leads the technical training and programmes, while the founding parent focuses on maintaining the academy ethos of inclusivity and an ethical environment. These form the principal foundations for an academy that continues to grow by positively impacting students through delivering high-quality instruction while upholding the principles of integrity, open communication, and true community values. As we grow, we remain committed to empowering students not just physically, but in confidence, character, and connection to themselves and to others.

Sensei Ray, Leicester

About Sensei Ray

I grew up in Cambridge, where I had an insatiable love for learning. But by the time I reached secondary school, that passion was tested in ways I hadn’t anticipated. A hostile learning environment, filled with bullying from both peers and, shockingly, some teachers, turned my school years into a challenging time. For a while, it felt like a part of me had been silenced—the part that was eager to explore, to grow, to dream. However, those early hardships sparked something in me: a fierce determination to rise above, and a passion to help others do the same.

The bullying didn’t just toughen me up physically or mentally; it gave me a deep understanding of what it means to feel unsupported. And that’s something I’ve carried into my work as an instructor today. When I’m teaching a class, I make sure every student knows they’re in a space where they’re understood, respected, and capable of growth. No one is left behind.

In 2003, my wife and I decided it was time for a change. We were ready for something new and exciting, but where exactly? So, we did what any reasonable couple would do: grabbed a GB atlas, a pin, closed our eyes, and let fate decide! Well, not quite like that—but close enough. Leicester ended up being the winner. My journey into Martial Arts started with my eldest son. I initially joined him in classes as moral support (or, let’s be honest, a way to make sure he didn’t quit after the first session). But before I knew it, I was hooked! Six months in, my instructor invited me to join the instructor team. I laughed—then realised they were serious! I didn’t feel ready, but anyone who knows me knows that I rarely feel ‘ready’ for new challenges. So, I gave it a go. Fast forward a year, and I’m standing in front of a class as a Green Belt, solo, hoping I could teach them more than just how to tie their belts!

Teaching wasn’t something I expected to fall in love with, but once I started, I couldn’t stop. My students—from total beginners to those aiming for their Black Belts—have taught me as much as I’ve taught them. I’m constantly refining my teaching style, learning how to adapt to each student’s personality. Every class is a puzzle, figuring out what makes each person tick and helping them find their rhythm.

One of my most memorable students was a 6-year-old who communicated only non-verbally, even at home. They trained quietly for months, absorbing everything without saying a word. Then, one day during a punch drill, they let out a small “kiai”—a shout of energy. The whole class cheered. Over time, those small yells turned into full conversations, leaving their mum in tears when she heard her child speak for the first time. Those are the moments that remind me that Martial Arts is about so much more than physical practice—it’s about unlocking potential, both mentally and emotionally.

Outside the dojo, my family and faith ground me. I volunteer with my church’s tech team, helping others thrive behind the scenes.

More About Sensei Ray

I began my martial arts journey in May 2011. Little did I know, this experience would ignite a passion that has shaped my life ever since. By July 2012, I earned my Level 1 Instructor certification and started teaching, finding immense satisfaction in helping students, both young and old, progress from complete beginners to confident martial artists.

First Black Belt

My personal progression has been just as important to my development as an instructor. In December 2013, I earned my First Black Belt and completed Level 2 Instructor training. One year later, in December 2014, I achieved First Dan and then went on to earn my Second Dan in December 2016.

Third Dan Black Belt

My most recent milestone came in December 2019, when I was awarded Third Dan Black Belt. Alongside teaching, I have competed in local tournaments, securing first place in KATA and Sparring events. These experiences have deepened my understanding of martial arts and continue to inspire my teaching approach, emphasising both discipline and personal growth.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

In July 2019, I expanded my skill set by taking up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), where I currently hold a Blue Belt. This has added a new layer to my understanding of self-defence, I integrate elements of BJJ into my karate classes, offering students a well-rounded and practical martial arts education.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of learning from some of the greatest in martial arts, including Bill “Superfoot” Wallace, Bob Breen, and Royce Gracie. These experiences have shaped not just my techniques but also my teaching philosophy: every student is unique, and my goal is to create a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Whether a student is aiming for their black belt or simply looking to improve their confidence, I strive to help them unlock their full potential, both inside and outside the dojo. These experiences have been invaluable, showing me that no matter how far you go, there’s always more to learn. I bring this attitude into every class I teach, because I believe the best instructors never stop being students themselves.

Sensei Katie

About Sensei Katie

My Martial Arts journey started with my daughter. Prior to starting martial arts she used to be boisterous and a bit of a handful to say the least! Over time martial arts taught her discipline and respect and I could see the valuable life lessons she was learning.  I joined in on a parent coaching session with her one day and before I knew it, I was also hooked!

A few months later my instructor invited me to join the instructor team.  At first I was extremely nervous as it wasn’t like anything I’d ever done before, but with dedication and perseverance I began to relish it.  I really enjoy meeting new families and helping their children progress.

Every child needs different things from martial arts and by being personable and respectful of their wishes I really believe anything is possible.
My daughter is a junior black belt and I’m also a black belt myself now!

I have a passion for martial arts and I like to motivate and encourage students so they can learn at their own pace without judgement.  Nothing gives me more pride than seeing a nervous student overcome their fears and walk away from a class with a smile on their face.

I have a genuine enthusiasm for martial arts and I’m committed to sharing it with others.  I also have the ability to work with students of different backgrounds and learning styles and I’m dedicated to help students learn and progress.
